FISH An inspirational story of courage and freewill – with great life lessons.

Once again, we have picked a very simple but extremely impactful book to share with you this month. Our book for May is FISH by Stephen C. Lundin, Harry Paul and John Christensen.

FISH focuses on the attitudes that we take to our workplace. The key character is Mary Jane Ramirez who has found herself running a department at her workplace that lacks energy, passion and is considered a ‘toxic dump’. She is tasked with turning this department around. Through her experiences at the famous Pike Place Fish market in Seattle she learns an important lesson – We may not have a choice about the work we do, but we do have a choice about how we work! Even when things are tough at the office, it is still our responsibility to choose the attitude we bring to our workplace. It’s about living in the moment and finding joy each day of your life by being passion driven in your actions, thoughts and relationships in and outside of your work environment. As quoted in the book “the risk of doing nothing is probably greater than the risk of acting.

FISH is a short and easy read but the lessons are packed with wisdom. It is a great instruction manual for employers to create a progressive and fun work environment. As people are struggling with getting comfortable with new norms, re-strategizing, holding on to jobs for purposes of maintaining financial security or debating on their next move, more than ever we need to choose our attitude and focus on bringing a positive energy to the work we are doing.
